​On January 17 2015, José Antonio Peña left us after a long illness. The void he left in the club is irreplaceable. Therefore, a group of athletes and coaches of Txindoki Grupo Jaso Atletismo Taldea wanted to promote an event in his memory. The club's board has joined this initiative and this is how the "Gran Premio Ordizia - Meeting José Antonio Peña" was born.

José Antonio Peña lived athletics in a very intense way and did a great job promoting this sport both in Ordizia and in the region, in the province, in the Basque Country and also at a national level.

In the mid 80's he began his work as a coach in the club and in the last 30 years he had a wide range of athletes under his orders. Among them we can highlight Alazne Furundarena, Iker Sukia, Odei López... 

​

He was a national level athletics judge and held positions in both the Basque Federation and the Federation of Guipuzcoa and he had a close relationship with the responsibles for Spanish athletics at the time. The Ordizia City Council and the Ordizia Sports Council awarded him the town plaque in 2007 for the work he did throughout his life to promote the sport. It will be difficult to fill the void he has left in Goierri athletics.

This event is part of the calendar of the Spanish Athletics Federation from the beginning and part of the World Athletics Challenger Series from 2022. We intend to attract the best Spanish athletes and some international athletes, and make a first class athletic meeting.
